Why the Right Vehicle Makes or Breaks Your Tahoe Trip
Lake Tahoe sits at 6,225 feet elevation. The Donner Summit — which most Reno-to-Tahoe routes cross — hits 7,239 feet. During ski season, CalTrans can require chains or AWD at any moment. Getting stuck in a 2WD sedan at the Summit is not a good story.
We've helped thousands of RAD renters get to the mountain safely. Here are the five vehicle types that earn the most 5-star reviews from Tahoe-bound renters.
1. Subaru Outback or Forester — The Classic Tahoe Choice
Symmetrical all-wheel drive, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and X-Mode for slippery terrain. The Outback is practically the unofficial car of Lake Tahoe. It fits four adults plus skis in the back. RAD hosts often include roof ski racks and all-weather mats at no extra charge.
Best for: Groups of 2-4, weekend ski trips, families with kids.
2. Toyota 4Runner or Tacoma — Maximum Capability
If there's a storm in the forecast, nothing on our platform handles it better. The 4Runner's 9.6 inches of ground clearance laughs at snow berms. The Tacoma doubles as a hauler for your gear. Both have available 4WD with Low range for genuine off-road capability if you venture to any side roads.
Best for: Groups who want zero worries, gear-heavy trips, post-ski hot tub adventures on forest roads.
3. Tesla Model Y — The Surprising Tahoe Winner
Controversial opinion: the Tesla Model Y is one of the best Tahoe ski cars available. All-wheel drive, instant torque on slippery roads, a huge frunk that stays warm for ski boots, and the ability to preheat the cabin while still plugged in at your hotel. Range at elevation is 15-20% lower than rated, so plan your charging stops.
RAD tip: Charge to 90% in Reno before leaving. There are Superchargers at South Lake Tahoe, Kings Beach, and Truckee. You won't need mid-trip charging for most day trips from Reno.
Best for: Tech-savvy renters, couples, people who want a premium experience without the rental counter.
4. Chevy Tahoe or Ford Expedition — Family/Group Hauler
Six to eight people and their ski gear? A full-size SUV is the only answer. These vehicles seat everyone in comfort, have enough cargo space for a week of ski equipment, and ride high enough to handle any Sierra Nevada weather. Plus, there's no awkward argument about whose car gets the ski-boot smell.
Best for: Groups of 5+, multi-day Tahoe trips, families with lots of gear.
5. Jeep Wrangler — Fun First
The Wrangler is the most fun car to drive to Tahoe. It handles snow confidently, looks incredible in mountain photos, and is genuinely capable. The tradeoff: it's not the most comfortable on a 2-hour highway drive and cargo space is limited. But for a weekend powder day with one other person and minimal gear, the vibe is unmatched.
Best for: Couples, adventure seekers, anyone who wants the Tahoe experience to feel like an experience.
Chain Requirements: What Every Tahoe Renter Needs to Know
California requires carrying chains (or cables) even if your vehicle is AWD when chain controls are in effect. R1 (chains required on 2WD, AWD OK) is common. R2 (chains required on all vehicles except AWD with snow tires) happens several times a year. Always carry chains when driving to Tahoe in winter.
RAD hosts with Tahoe-popular vehicles often include chains or cables. Filter for "Snow Chains Included" when searching, or ask your host directly. Most are happy to help.
